Wine Knight delegation in China

QWINE EXPO 2023: Wine knights and 26 local winemakers visited China’s largest wine fair.

Winegrowers from Burgenland and Lower Austria joined delegation leader Senate Visitor Paul Rittsteuer and Senate envoys Senator Ernst Möderl, Senator Josef Münzenrieder and Bernhard Müller to experience the enormous dimensions of wine in the Middle Kingdom together with the Austrian Wine Queen Hannah and her Princess Sophie. The Qingtian region in the southern Chinese province of Zhejiang is considered a metropolis for China’s import trade, with 60,000 products presented on a total area of 90,000 square metres at 1700 stands at the QWine Expo 2023. These included 400 Austrian wines, but wines from all over Europe, Chile and South Africa were also presented by around 2000 wineries.
As the Chinese, who also produce great wines themselves, are very committed to high-quality red wine with a high alcohol content from the upper price segment and are in the process of discovering Austria’s quality white wine, there was always a lot going on at the Austrian stand. Austrian wine is also a culinary must-have for the Chinese, and if all 1.4 billion Chinese were of this opinion, it is possible to estimate the potential that lies dormant here for our winegrowers, especially in cities with high purchasing power such as Beijing and Shangai. The European Order of the Knights of Wine is doing important pioneering work in this area, having set up the Chinese Consulate in the course of this trip, headed up by the Foundation Commander Weiping Zhan.
